For many managers, writing a business plan was simply an exercise required in many business school classes. For the entrepreneur, the business plan is more than an exercise, it is an essential component in the development of a new organization – perhaps the most essential component.
The business plan is like a resume for the organization. A well-written business plan is an entrée to open doors for investment and funding, incorporating, banking, and hiring top people to work in the organization. The business plan gives more than the budgets and P & L projections necessary to garner seed capital. It should also tell prospective stakeholders exactly what you plan to do, how you intend to conduct your business, and what business sector(s) are open to you. It should demonstrate your understanding of the competition, and where you will have comparative advantages. It should show that you have a broad AND narrow understanding of the local and global economy.
A good business plan serves the entrepreneur even if he or she does not apply for financing, because it helps one to better understand the dynamics and mechanics of the business of the new venture; to have a more structured and objective look at the new business; and it acts as a checklist that makes sure no major factor is omitted.
The MIT Enterprise Forum workshop will give you guidance in creating your business plan for a new enterprise, or improving the business plan for an existing business. Participants are encouraged to bring a draft of their business plan to the presentation; the organizers may be able to give comments.
